Born in 1986 in New Jersey, Dwan has quickly made himself a household name in the poker world. He started as an online player, so the majority of his success has been in the online arena. However, he is starting to make some noise in the live arena, as well. He has participated in several live tournaments since becoming legal in the U.S., and he has been on a wide variety of poker television shows.

To say that Dwan put in massive hours online is an understatement. His expert multi-tabling allowed him to download Full Tilt Poker and play incredible volumes. Because of this, his bankroll ballooned as he moved up in stakes.
Being one of the best players in the world does not mean you get to avoid downswings. Dwan’s favorite game is heads-up NLHE or PLO, so the large swings in his game are pretty much inevitable. He has both won and lost millions in a single session. The most famous downswing he’s had came at the hands of a someone from Sweden called “Isildur1”, who sat with him on multiple heads-up tables. By the end of the week, Dwan had lost around $5 million. The thought of losing such a staggering amount is enough to cause many players to quit poker and turn to safer games like Craps online, but Dwan has obviously proven that he can handle the mental challenge poker provides.
Dwan announced his $1 million challenge at the start of last year. With the exception of Phil Galfond, he is willing to 4-table with anyone heads-up for 50,000 hands. Any player up money after 50k hands would receive an additional $1.5 million from Dwan, but if Dwan came out ahead, that player would have to agree to give Dwan $500k. When it comes to live MTTs, Dwan has $1.5 million in cashes. He has cashes all over the world, including in the EPT, the Aussie Millions, and of course the WPT and WSOP. His highest WSOP finish happened just last year in a $1,500 No Limit Hold’em event. He finished second place behind Simon Watt for a little under $400,000. Dwan’s failure to win a bracelet affected a lot of people other than himself because apparently a lot of people were betting on whether or not he would win one last year. Dwan always had respect from the online pros, but his live event cashes and appearances on Poker After Dark and High Stakes Poker have caused the live pros to notice him, too.
